Raw water inlet after flash mixing.
The Mendoza plant has been designed to provide the city of La Chorrera with 40 US million gallons per day of potable water taking raw water from Lake Gatun.

The contract was for a full turnkey design and construction.

The project scope included the construction of a new raw water intake and pump station located on the shoreline of Lake Gatun, comprising of a screening chamber and the provision of four vertical turbine pumps each rated with a flow of 1638 m3/hr, 129 m head. Pump station works included the provision of surge protection.

Raw water is pumped to the treatment plant 6 km within a 1600/1500 mm diameter pipeline of Fiberglass (FRP) design. Workscope included the construction of a new access road and High Voltage transmission line supply feed to the new pump station.

The treatment plant consists of rapid mixing, flocculation, coagulation, clarification by the dissolved air floatation (DAF) process, prior to rapid gravity filtration and final disinfection  carried out within a combined chlorine contact tank/storage reservoir with a total capacity of 1 USG (265,000 m3).

The treatment plant includes provision of the cleaning and recovery of the filter backwash water for re-use, thereby keeping the overall plant losses under the process to a minimum.

Treated water from the site reservoir then flows under gravity within the new 18 km FRP pipeline of 1400/1200 mm diameter connecting to new reservoirs  (provided by others) at Maria Leticia and Guadalupe for onward distribution into the clients system.
