Santiago, the capital city of Chile, is situated in the Santiago Valley with a rapidly expanding population. As a consequence there is significant expansion of housing, especially at the eastern end of Santiago, making many new demands for water and sewerage services.
Cascal has been active in Chile since 1995 principally through two subsidiary companies AGUAS SANTIAGO S.A. and AGUAS CHACABUCO S.A.
Aguas Santiago operates concessions in the centrally regulated urban areas, mainly to the east of the city. All concessions in Chile are perpetual and are granted under Chilean law DFL 382/89, supervised and regulated by the Superintendence of Sanitary Services (SISS) and financial regulator.
Aguas Chacabuco provides services to contract regulated new population centres in rural areas to the north of the city, which are all potential future urban areas.
In both cases, the two companies provide initial construction of water and wastewater infrastructure followed by the ongoing provision of sanitary services to the inhabitants of those areas.
AGUAS SANTIAGO
Aguas Santiago handles new concessions in the regulated urban areas. After obtaining water resources to meet the demands of these areas, Aguas Santiago applied for the concessions which were granted by SISS, allowing the first water supplied to customers to begin in early 1996. One of these areas is Valle Escondido in La Dehesa which is a housing development with its own sports complex and golf course. Other concessions include residential developments in Nueva Suiza, El Chin, Rinconada de Huinganal, Mirador la Dehesa and Inversiones Rapel.
In addition to these areas, there are also areas of urban controlled regulated zones within the rural areas which are mainly to the north of Santiago. Aguas Santiago also won the concession for one of the largest of these areas, the Pan de Azúcar housing development.
AGUAS CHACABUCO S.A.
Aguas Chacabuco operates in non-urban areas providing services for new housing development areas on the northern outskirts of Santiago, for instance in the Chicureo valley, 30 minutes by car from the Chilean Cascal head office located in the city. Aguas Chacabuco provides services to a total of fifteen new housing developments in the valley.
Aguas Chacabuco also offer services to several new housing developments in the areas of Colina Sur and Colina Inferior which are adjacent to Chicureo.
Both companies have an extensive market potential as they are operating in new high-income housing development areas. They have invested heavily in water rights to support this operational growth.
The potential number of connections for both Aguas Santiago and Aguas Chacabuco is likely to increase significantly over the next few years.
