Mid September 2007 saw the opening of the newly remodelled Stour Leisure Centre in Ashford, Kent. The new facility incorporates the existing and refurbished 25m competition pool, a separate leisure pool with flume, a fast moving raging river, a wave machine and many water features.
A children's learner pool together with two raised spas were also provided. Biwater Leisure designed, supplied, installed and commissioned all of the water treatment and interactive play equipment in the Centre, as well as the raging river ride and wave machine. The features included a water mushroom, seven air seats, floor bubblers, two rain curtains, water spouts, flume supplies, water cannon, baby rods
and jump posts. A poolside remote features panel was provided for local control of different feature programmes.
Using modern filtration equipment, three separate treatment systems treat over 580 cubic metres of water each hour. Automatic chemical mixing and dosing together with multiple UV units were provided.
Working on refurbishment projects often presents a variety of challenges. Restricted space in the plant room demanded imaginative space engineering in order to fit everything in. This, coupled with the fact
that the plant room is threatened by possible flooding from the adjacent River Stour, meant the adoption of innovative approaches to the water treatment design.
