The swimming pools at Fullwell Cross originally housed a 33 metre long, eight lane pool which was constructed in 1967. This was sub divided at a later date into a 25 metre long main pool and learner pool using a fixed boom and fixed false floor.
In 2007 the decision was taken to replace the original pool filtration equipment, refurbish the scum outlet pipes and introduce a balance tank for the surface skimming. Additionally, treated water sparge inlet pipes were to be fitted under the boom false floors together with surface skimming inside the fixed boom.
Biwater’s first on site job was the removal of the old filtration plant which included two large horizontal filters, cast iron pipework, cast iron strainer boxes and the old type clarifier. A disused paddling pool filtration system was also removed from the plant room.
The old equipment was replaced with four modern 2.2 metre diameter pressure sand filters, variable speed drive circulating pumps, a plate heat exchanger, ultra violet dosing and chemical dosing equipment. Additional inlets were provided through the pool walls and boom for improved circulation.
The entire refurbishment contract was successfully completed on time in the scheduled time scale of four months.
