Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Overview of role:

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will take technical lead on specific Projects as identified by the Engineering manager, engineering design of mechanical equipment by means of technical submissions, specifications and drawings, including Bills of Materials (BOM’s) and Consolidated Bills of Materials (CBOM’s), in accordance with the relevant client and/or international standards

Additionally, will assist the Engineering Manager in coaching other Mechanical Engineers to develop Design skills and work to the departmental processes.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Required: 10 years’+ experience within Water/Waste Water industry
  • Desirable: Mechanical Engineer Degree – 10 years relevant experience
  • Minimum: HNC Mechanical Engineering – 10 years relevant experience

Duties and responsibilities:

  • To be responsible for specific aspects of project execution of the contract within the department
  • To professionally engineer specific mechanical aspects of the contract
  • Co-ordination of civil / structural, electrical and instrumentation design elements of the project through the appropriate discipline engineers
  • Supervision and direction of draughtsmen in the production of drawings, BOM’s & CBOM’s and the subsequent checking of drawings, BoM’s and CBOM’s
  • To assist the Engineering Manager in the supervision and output of mechanical design engineers, draughtsman; staff and agency, to meet the demands of the contracts
  • Preparation of enquiries and purchase requisitions against BOM’s and CBOM’s, assessment of suppliers’ quotations and technical submissions prior to client approval
  • Identifying changes to contract scope, raising of change orders and monitoring of the same
  • Assist in the monitoring of man hours’ expenditure and resource requirements to ensure activities are complete within budget and to program against project specifications
  • Undertaking the inspection of equipment as and when required
  • Providing advice/assistance during the construction and commissioning stages of the contract
  • Attending contract review meetings as arranged by the Project Manager and providing technical assistance on engineering aspects
  • Preparation of mechanical standards, data sheets, and specifications
  • Liaise with purchasing and shipping department
  • To effectively liaise with other staff members, clients, and suppliers to ensure customer satisfaction and satisfactory contract completion
  • Coordinate the preparation of a tender in accordance with Company policies and procedures
  • Coordinate conceptual process and engineering design, liaise with other staff members, clients, and suppliers to ensure satisfactory progress and completion of tenders
  • To ensure that a competitive, commercially sound tender is prepared
  • To assess any risks and address these risks
  • To assist the Engineering Manager / Proposals Manager in the supervision and output of mechanical design engineers, draughtsman; staff and agency, to meet the demands of the tenders
  • Participate in tenders, preparing, coordinating and assisting in the preparation of cost estimates and specifications forming meaningful tenders in compliance with the Clients Specifications with the aim to convert them into profitable contracts
  • Coordination of all design elements of the tender through the appropriate discipline engineers
  • Supervision and direction of draughtsman in the production of tender drawings, and subsequent checking of tender drawings
  • Preparation of enquiries to suppliers for equipment. Evaluate and discuss suppliers’ quotations, technically and price
  • Identifying alternative proposals and cost these alternative proposals
  • Assist in the monitoring of man hours’ expenditure and resource requirements, to ensure activities are complete within budget and to Tender program
  • Attending tender review meetings as arranged and providing assistance with negotiations with Client, suppliers etc. and technical assistance on engineering aspects
  • Preparation of reports, technical write-ups, data sheets, and specifications

Person specification:

1. Knowledge and experience:

  • Understand the principles of potable & waste water and reverse osmosis treatment
  • Have experience of advising / controlling other members of staff in designing all aspects of water sewage and reverse osmosis treatment plants
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in a similar position

2. Skills:

  • Technical / practical / communicational / leadership etc.
  • Needs to be enthusiastic, efficient, self-motivated and able to work as part of a team interacting confidently with others
  • Ability to rationalise designs and produce economic plant layouts
  • Good general knowledge of all aspects of water treatment, e.g. civil engineering, process engineering, electrical engineering and project management
  • A flexible mind, with the ability to assimilate large amounts of different data at one time
  • Ability to present technical proposals clearly, confidently and convincingly
  • Good Interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Able to travel overseas as and when required
  • Computer literate within Microsoft Office

5. Working condition:

  • Based in Biwater’s Headquarters in Dorking, Surrey, but with travel as necessary in the UK and overseas to fulfil the above work scope
  • Visits overseas to achieve appointed tasks in connection with either the execution of projects or the winning of new business
