San Francisco, Panama – 17 December 2024: Biwater has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Corporación de Acueductos Turísticos Juanillo, S.A. (Acuatur), the operator of the water supply and sanitation systems for Cap Cana, a premier destination city in the Dominican Republic. The MOU outlines plans for the consolidation, refurbishment, expansion, operation, and maintenance of these systems. CivilMek, S.A., a prominent local construction firm, was also a co-signatory to the MOU.
The agreement establishes the foundation for a long-term joint venture to enhance water supply and sanitation infrastructure in the area. This initiative includes the desalination of brackish water from a borehole well field, ensuring the sustainable provision of water to meet the growing demands of Cap Cana while supporting the long-term operation and maintenance of its water supply and sanitation systems.
The MOU was signed at a meeting attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from Acuatur, Biwater, and CivilMek. Biwater was represented by Daniel Boersner, Managing Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Commenting on the MOU, Mr. Boersner said: "This project will strengthen and expand the water supply infrastructure in Cap Cana, combining advanced desalination solutions with sustainable practices to meet the area’s growing water needs. By working together with Acuatur, we aim to provide a reliable and resilient water system that will supply high quality potable water to this Destination City and support its long-term development, including the many high-end hotels and resorts already in operation and those in development.”
Biwater has a strong history of delivering water projects in the Dominican Republic, including the finance, design, and construction of critical water treatment and supply solutions for the cities of La Romana, San Cristobal, and San Francisco de Macoris. These fast-track projects were implemented to provide immediate relief to areas suffering from acute water stress.
This MOU follows the recent signing of another MOU in the Latin American region, where Biwater signed an agreement with the Corporation Agua para el Chaco in Paraguay. This agreement outlines plans to refurbish and expand water supply infrastructure in the Chaco region, incorporating sustainable practices and advanced technologies to address water scarcity challenges.
